• Makes significant contributions to the community at large.
• Makes significant contributions and/or participates actively in community athletic events.
Paul Childs understood life. He understood about giving, such as visiting nursing homes throughout Lawrence to talk with the elderly. He knew what it was like to be a Christian, like the time he helped repair homes for poor families in Appalachia. He appreciated the value of school, as seen in his commitment to graduate from the University of Kansas in pre-med. Paul also understood what is like to compete in athletics, like the 1986 Baptist Medical Center Triathlon he was leading until an accident cost him his life. Paul Childs, at age 20, understood many things most of us don’t learn until later in our lives. Paul was special. Paul’s spirit continues today. Although it has been 18 years since his death, Paul’s impact with those who were fortunate enough to meet him is everlasting. As a friend of his said at the time of his death, “He just had this love of God and people.”
